84 now closed on east side near Skyline

Our group Thursday morning may have been one of the last to make it through 84 before they shut it down completely. Apparently it’s going to be two days before they open it up again, and then it’s for local traffic only. This is going to put a lot of extra traffic onto Kings & Old LaHonda, so please be extra-careful.

The video shows you where the washed-out sections are.

  1. When I went through yesterday evening the road had slipped a bit further than that. I can’t imagine it being more than one lane until end of winter when they can repair it.

The plus was I ascended 84 with literally no other vehicles, which was amazing! It’s a beautiful road when there are no cars. The minus is OLH and Kings could really suck for a while.

You can still ride it up to Skywood and turn right then cut back up to the top through there, so that would be a nice traffic-free way to the top. (They let me through the construction site on 84 but my second time through they told me they didn’t want me coming through that way again.)

    1. Lanier: The second road slip, a bit further down the hill, will likely preclude traffic as far as Skywood. That section began to fall away last weekend. It’s possible they might be favorable towards cyclists wanting to ride up (or down) but I wouldn’t plan a ride that counted on that happening.
